Economic development is produced through the interaction of many disciplines and institutions. The existence of multiple disciplines is not a reason to leave the economic-development function professionally fragmented.
The problem IfEDI addresses is the absence of a sufficiently shared professional foundation across this interconnected practice.

IfEDI complements existing professional identities. An economist, engineer, planner, accountant, lawyer, researcher, entrepreneur or public administrator may retain their primary professional identity while also practising within economic development and innovation.
A Multidisciplinary Professional Function
Economic development and innovation practice is multidisciplinary professional work concerned with deliberately improving the conditions through which development outcomes are produced. The determining factor is the substantive function performed — not a job title.

The profession is not narrowed to municipal LED, nor broadened so far that every occupation becomes economic development practice. "Fields of practice" describe areas of work — they are not a replacement certification structure.

19 assessed professional certification pathways built on a shared professional core and specialist areas of practice. Assessed competence — not merely membership — leading to recognised professional designations from Student to Fellow.
3. Learning, Professional Formation & CPD
Short courses, masterclasses, professional formation and continuous professional development that keep practitioners current and competent throughout their careers, aligned to NQF levels 5–10.
4. Research, Policy & Advisory
Applied research, professional knowledge, policy engagement, publications, institutional advisory and implementation support — a professional-body function that strengthens evidence and practice across the field.

Different Routes, One Profession
Participation occurs through different routes. Not everyone must be professionally certified — the route depends on the function performed.
1. Professional Practice
A practitioner performing substantive economic development and innovation work may follow membership + certification + CPD.
2. Governance & Oversight
A board member may engage primarily through ACEDIG governance responsibility.
3. Institutional Capability
An institution may participate through organisational membership and AEDII.
4. Knowledge & Ecosystem Contribution
A researcher may contribute knowledge through research, publications and ACOEDI without automatically requiring practitioner certification.
5. Leadership & Strategic Direction
A senior system leader may participate through ALFEDI where their authority and role fit. Not every executive automatically qualifies for ALFEDI.
